Heritage Monuments in Agra

The historic city of Agra is renowned for its stunning architectural splendours and is undoubtedly one of the most loved tourist destinations of India. People from all across the globe visit this grand city which has some of the wonderful heritage monuments. Most of them were built during the Mughal era. The magnificent monuments and buildings are have unmatched grandeur and opulence.

World Heritage Site Red Fort also referred as Lal Quila is one of the most popular forts of India. In the year 1565, Mughal Emperor Akbar founded the great monument. This is one of the most splendid monuments of Agra and constructed fully using red sandstone. The scintillating fort comprises of various other magnificent structures such as Sheesh Mahal, Mina Masjid, Moti Masjid, Musamman Burj, Diwane-am, Diwan-e-Khaas and Khaas Mahal.

Agra has another famous heritage monument, the Sikandra, which is a tomb of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The tomb is made up of red ochre and sandstone and is 4 kms from Agra. The tomb has Indo-Islamic structure and is visited by millions of visitors.

India Fatehpur Sikri is positioned on the outskirts of Agra was constructed in 16th century by Mughal Emperor Akbar. For almost a decade, the world heritage site was the capital of Mughal Empire. Mughal Emperor Akbar constructed the site in honour of a Sufi saint, Sheikh Salim Chisti, who blessed him with a son.

Another popular monument of Agra is the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daula was constructed by Mughal Empress Noor Jahan in the loving memory of her father Itimad-ud-Daula. This is another wonderful example of Islamic architecture situated on the banks of River Yamuna.
